Poker Professionals-Playing Poker As A profession

Due to the glamorous elements of the game, poker appears to be a lucrative job.  The fame and fortune amassed in poker tournaments that are now being aired on television is kindling many players to aspire to become professionals of the game.  A small word of advice to these aspirants, don’t give up your day job.

People take up playing poker as a profession, because there is no other, better alternative available.  The best aspect of this career is that there is no boss, and the player decides his work schedule.  A good expertise of the game, an insistent desire to learn and develop the game, and last but not the least, a passion for the game are necessary.  If the player lacks this zeal to play, then, no matter how successful he is, he will not be happy.

Johnny Moss was a legend of the game.  He won the world championship thrice, and was an inductee in the Poker Hall of Fame.  He has stated that poker is the hard way to make an easy living.  He also said that winning the game was easy, but safeguarding the money from robbers, cheats, and the cops was the hardest.  These hard times no longer exist today.

Poker players playing tournaments need not travel by road today.  Today, most poker players win more than a million dollars in tournaments.  They lead a life of luxury, basking in the wealth  from their wins.  There are a lot of stressful situations they have to go through.  Poker players must learn to take both success and defeats in the same composed way.  Their ability to handle bad beats makes them a good player.  There should be enough moral support from near ones, and one’s own mental agility helps deal with defeats.

The most important aspect, but the most over looked one, is managing one’s funds.  For instance, if a player of C grade is an A grade in managing his funds, he tends to have more money than his counterparts who have poor or no money management skills.  On the other hand if the player is an A grade but is D or F in money management, he will end up bankrupt.  Bad habits like in the pit, betting horses, betting sports, doing drugs, and drinking also lead to the loss of money.

There is a lot of evidence that if poker players have bad habits, their lives are done.  For instance, a poker player had the habit of betting on sports.  He used to sit at home and watch football instead of playing poker.  Even at the table, he concentrated on the television sets, watching football.  He neither won the betting nor did he win the hands in his game.  As a result of this, he suffered from a money crunch for twenty, long years.

It is a sad thing to note that many top players gamble in one way or another.  They bet on sports, horses, and play in the pit.  They undergo a lot of frustration and stand vulnerable to binge broke and getting staked.  They should prove to be worthy enough to borrow money, and they will be staked only if other players consider them good players.
